Trayvon Martin prayer vigil held in Daffin Park

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Folks in Coastal Empire gathered Thursday night to pay homage to Trayvon Martin.

The Chatham County Young Democrats, Mothers of Murdered Sons and local Savannah rapper Meezy Black gathered in Daffin Park to hold a prayer vigil and shoot a music video dedicated to Trayvon and his family. The families were encouraged to wear goodies, bring skittle and Arizona drinks. various community leaders, ministers and various organization came to speak about the increasing gun violence in our communities.

"We are coming together as a community to pay homage to Trayvon his family from Savannah," said Meezy.

"I am here in support of the rally and some justice for Trayvon and also for and in support of the senseless killing that we must stop in our community," said Alderman John Hall.

Organizers hope this will raise awareness about gun violence and the impact it has on families and the community.

    After years of an almost complete moratorium, the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council voted 12 to 1 Monday to open a limited 2017 red snapper fishing season in the South Atlantic. If approved by NOAA Fisheries, the season will likely begin in mid-to late October.
