Motorcycle rider covers America to fight cancer

STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

A dozen lawmen on motorcycles led Dean Shirey into downtown Statesboro. The local police officers and sheriff's deputies are members of the local Blue Knights chapter - an riding organization for those who wear the badge.

Shirey, a retired Seattle policeman, is riding the perimter of America to raise money in the fight against cancer.

"Originally the ride was just something on my bucket list of things to do, he explained. "But my wife and I have lost so many loved ones to cancer, we decided - when we said this was the year to do it - that we wanted to give it a purpose.

He hopes to raise $10,000 through the journey. His website, www.cancerrideamerica.org , allows visitors to follow his travels and donate to the cause online. He leaves Statesboro on Wednesday toward South Carolina.
