Man in custody after fatal drive-by shooting in Effingham County

Deputies in Effingham County are investigating a fatal drive-by shooting that took place early Tuesday night. Just a few hours after incident, they had a suspect in custody for questioning.

It happened on Nixon Chapel Road, north of Shawnee and south of Newington, shortly after 8 p.m.

Deputies were called to the home where they say a man in the front yard had been shot in the stomach by someone who had driven by. The victim was taken to Memorial Health in Savannah by ambulance. Life Star air transport had been called, but was not used.

The victim, we now know, has died. Authorities say the area isn't typically a problem area for them.

"This is the north end of the county. We don't normally get too many shooting calls out here. It's quite possible, maybe too early to speculate, this person knew the shooter. Normally it's pretty quiet up here," David Ehsanipoor, Effingham County Sheriff's Office spokesman, told WTOC.

The name of the victim will not be released until all family have been notified. Meanwhile, the suspect in custody we've been told was brought in by his mother after Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie talked her into turning her son in.

The investigation is ongoing.
