GSU Eagles have "a lot to play for" in 2013

The 2013 season will be the last for the Georgia Southern Eagles in the Football Championship Subdivision.

In 2014, the Eagles will move up to the Football Bowl Subdivision and the Sun Belt Conference.

The move leaves the six-time FCS national champions ineligible for the Southern Conference title and the NCAA Playoffs.

That has led many to question what head coach Jeff Monken and his Eagles have to play for.

Don't worry about that, says Monken. He and his team have found a pretty good reason to hit the field this season besides titles.

"There's been such a history and tradition of winning at Georgia Southern. That's not something you just push by the side and say there's nothing to play for," says Monken. "There's a lot to play for. There's all those teams that have gone before this team, the 30 some football teams that have worn the blue and white. We're playing for them too."

The Eagles were picked to win the Southern Conference in their final season in the league by the coaches and media at SoCon Media Days Wednesday.

RB Dominique Swope, OL Dorian Byrd, and DB Lavelle Westbrooks were all chosen All-SoCon First Team.
