Change of command ceremony Thursday for Ft. Stewart's 3-7 CAV - WTOC-TV: Savannah, Beaufort, SC, News, Weather & Sports

Troopers to welcome Lt. Col. Jason Kidder at Ft. Stewart

Thursday will mark the beginning of a new chapter for Ft. Stewart's 3rd Squadron, 7th United States Cavalry Regiment. A change of command will signify the outgoing Commander, Lt. Col. Lance C. Varney, transferring command to the incoming commander, Lt. Col. Jason Kidder.

Varney took to the squadron's Facebook page this week commenting, "It has been a distinct honor to serve as the Squadron Commander for this great unit. Couldn't have asked for a better group of troopers, families and friends to serve with. I would like to express my most heartfelt gratitude to all who served and supported Amy and I during our tenure. I have truly enjoyed each and every day within the Squadron and will take many cherished memories from experience."

WTOC last caught up with the Lt. Col. after he and his troopers returned from Afghanistan. The 3-7 CAV was stationed in the northern remote part of the country, and worked directly with Afghan forces to help the their army and police take the lead on Afghan security.

"It made us all feel very proud to have number one, been selected to do that type of mission  and then, number two, we could see a change. We could see a change in the level of security, the level of autonomy and how the Afghan forces were really controlling their environment. So it was good to kind of leave on a great note, a positive note and come back to Fort Stewart." Varney told WTOC after their last deployment.

Thursday's ceremony will take place at Cottrell Field at Ft. Stewart at 9:30 a.m.
