3 Fort Stewart soldiers killed in Afghanistan

HINESVILLE, GA (WTOC) -

Three soldiers who were based at Fort Stewart were killed July 23 in Afghanistan.

The U.S. Dept. of Defense announced the soldiers' deaths Thursday. This the first deployment for all three soldiers.

1st Lt. Jonam Russell, 25, of Cornville, Ariz.; Sgt. Stefan M. Smith, 24 of Glennville; Spc. Rob L. Nichols, 24, of Colorado Springs, Colo., were killed  when their unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device in Soltan Kheyl, Afghanistan.

They were assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division.

Russell joined the Army in January 2011 and arrived at the unit in January 2013. Smith joined the Army in November 2009 and arrived at the unit in June 2012. Nichols joined the Army in Sept. 2010 and arrived at the unit in Janunary 2011.
