Wakefest making waves for a good cause this weekend

Wakefest got its start based off an idea Adam Gilbert and his friends had one day.

"It was just a bunch of friends got together one day and decided we wanted to do a wakeboarding tournament and a charity event where we could raise some money for a local family and help out with any kind of medical bills," Gilbert says.

That was four years ago, and this weekend, Wakefest makes waves again on the Flint River.

This year's event will raise money for seven year old Curt Poer, who suffers from Leigh's disease, which is a mitochondrial disorder.

"He's a great little kid. He's so much fun to be around," Gilbert says. "He's bound to a wheelchair now, but he's so full of life."

Gilbert says Wakefest continues to grow each year.

He expects over 75 wakeboarders from around the South to hit the Flint River Saturday, and they hope to raise over $10,000.

"Last year, we did $10,000 and I'd love to beat it this year," he says. "Ten thousand's a lot of money, especially for something we just dreamed up on doing."

Gilbert says he thinks Wakefest continues to get bigger and better each year is because people love to get out by the water and help out at the same time.

"Wakefest in the beginning was a small thing and a small attribute. Now it's just grown into this huge thing that everyone looks forward to," he says. "Everybody's going to come out here and have a good time, and watch an awesome sport grow, and help a family out in the same day."

Wakefest kicks off at 9:00 a.m. Saturday and lasts all day at the Flint River. Admission is free with a $25 fee to ride.

Gilbert says the best place to park a lawn chair to watch the action is at the Turner Boat Ramp, near the Flint River Municipal Golf Course.
