South GA football teams begin conditioning

SYLVESTER, GA (WALB) -

We are one step closer to the kickoff of high school football season as teams around South Georgia officially began conditioning Thursday.

One of those teams is the Worth County Rams under first year head coach Jason Tone.

Most teams, including the Rams, have been working out without pads all summer.

Thursday marks the beginning of official conditioning and practices and is the unofficial kickoff of the 2013 season.

Tone says the conditioning is a necessary part of the process, getting the kids prepared to strap up the pads in the South Georgia heat.

"Football's a different sport. It's hot, and people don't want to get out in the heat when it's hot, and then we put more stuff on them to make it hotter," Tone says. "So we've got to make sure we get them used to it and running around in it."

But Tone adds you can feel the energy pick up knowing kick off is right around the corner.

"We start school on Monday with kids, and we'll get them back in a routine, and that gives us twelve days in pads before we start kicking off our scrimmage," Tone says. "So the kids are getting fired up and the excitement's starting to build and we're just ready for the start of the season."

Teams can begin practicing in pads August 1 as long as they've completed at least five days of conditioning.
