Summer Angels recognized for volunteer efforts

Posted: Updated:

Young people in Savannah were honored Friday for their community service work.

The Summer Angels were recognized by Senior Citizens Inc. for devoting 1,000 hours of their summer vacation to making a difference in the lives of senior citizens all over Savannah.

Their efforts echoing so much throughout our community that Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson and the county commissioner both wrote letters to the group to pat them on the back for making the lives of seniors just a little bit easier.

"These are kids that are outstanding and they need to be recognized, so that's what we're trying to reinforce. We're trying to start them on a lifetime of volunteerism, so, you know, for them to see how easy it is to make a difference to somebody in the community," said Patti Lyons, director of Senior Citizens Inc.

"It teaches you good responsibility and interaction with other people other than your age and it's really important, I think, to have a good foundation with elderly people and it's really important, I think," said Aggness Koppis, a Summer Angel participant for four years.
