GLENNVILLE, GA (WTOC) -

The death of a Fort Stewart soldier this week touched many in Glennville's police department. Sgt. Stefan Smith, 24, worked as a police officer for the city for 15 months before he joined the Army. Detective Wes Kicklighter remembered when Smith came to Glennville in 2008.

"He was a good kid, had a good heart and a good head on his shoulders," he said. "He came here to work with his brother who was with the department. That was a special experience to work together."

Kicklighter said both brothers likewise left the department to follow a family tradition in serving in the military. The pair joined the Army.

"It's sad to think about someone so young losing their life and paying the ultimate sacrifice for their country," he added.

Smith, his wife and children, lived in Long County even after he joined the Army. Time and date for the funeral have not been finalized, but the service will be held at the Sanford Carter Funeral Home in Hinesville.
