Coweta Co. deputy: Man tries to run over wife, crashes into store

Greg Sims Greg Sims
NEWNAN, GA (CBS46) -

Investigators with the Coweta County Sheriff's Office said a man tried to run his wife over the in parking lot of a gas station but missed and drove through the front of the store.

Police identified the man as Greg Sims, 60. According to witnesses, the truck crashed into the glass at full speed.

"I heard the tires squealing, then I turned around and he was coming through the glass," Jeffery Bowls said. "When I looked back and seen it, I turned around and ran. He never stopped. Thank God I am still here."

Bowls was one of a handful of customers inside the store at the time.

Britney Reynolds said she was about to walk out when she saw her car get hit and the truck smash through the glass.

"Six seconds before I walked out the store, I heard a big loud boom, like an engine running, and right when I walked around there was a guy and a little girl on the next aisle and they jumped out of the way so they wouldn't get hit," Reynolds said.

Investigator Chad McDonald with the Coweta County Sheriff's Office said Sims appeared to be driving drunk and will face DUI and other charges.

McDonald said Sims was having a domestic dispute with his wife. He followed her to the gas station where he tried to run her over in the parking lot.

Hours earlier, Pam Hunter said the same man driving the white truck pulled a machete on her and a friend.

"He reached in his car and grabbed a machete, a big, long machete," Hunter said. "I wrote down his tag number and was going to call police. I wish I had called police when he pulled that machete. I wish I had called police, and maybe this would have not happened."

Crews worked into the night to board up the broken windows.

Sims was taken to the Coweta County Jail and was charged with aggravated assault, terroristic threats, and reckless driving, among other charges.

Orange Crush 2018 is in full effect this weekend, but so is the alcohol ban across Tybee Island. Law enforcement has been preparing for this huge annual event for some time. Patrol cars were lined up along Highway 80 as a cautionary measure to deter drinking and driving.
