Nelson Police warn residents to watch out for bears

Posted: Updated:

Nelson Police want residents to keep an eye out for a recent intruder. But, it's not a burglar, it's a bear.

Nelson Police Chief Heath Mitchell said he had a personal encounter with the bear, when he responded to a call on Habersham Way two weeks ago, and found the black bear sitting on a porch, eating cat food.

"When I approached the bear, and he growled and started towards me, I've always been told don't ever run from a bear," Mitchell said. "He stood up at the door when I got there, I'm 6'4", his nose probably touched my chin."

Connie Law, who lives across the street from that home, said she was concerned with the level of comfort that bear had.

"I just heard dogs barking, I come out and I see him going up their steps, and he just sits down to eat like he's at dinner," Law said. "He didn't seem scared. He just would eat, glimpse over, look at us and go back to eating, as we took pictures."

Mitchell urged residents to bear-proof their homes by doing the following things:

  • Don't put trash outside in trash cans until it's pick-up day.
  • Don't leave small pets or children unattended outside.
  • Don't leave pet food outside.
  • Don't leave food outside.

Mitchell also said that he doesn't want residents to shoot at bears, but instead, to call 911.
