Lady's Island apartment fire displaces four families - WTOC-TV: Savannah, Beaufort, SC, News, Weather & Sports

Four families put out of homes due to fire

Four families must now look for other housing, at least for the time being, after a fire at the Waterford Cove Apartment complex Thursday night. The apartments are located on Colony Gardens Road on Lady's Island.

Black smoke poured from one of the buildings yesterday afternoon as multiple fire agencies responded.

"I saw the smoke pouring out of the whole area here, so I immediately went to my apartment to make sure my husband and son were ok," says Angella Brabham, who lives in the affected building.

Her unit was not affected but that was not the case for four other units. One was heavily damaged by the fire, the other three have smoke and water damage. All four are unlivable.

The Lady's Island Assistant Fire Chief Scott Goneke said they believe the fire started in the kitchen of one of the units but the cause is still under investigation.

Eighteen people - 11 adults, five children and two infants now have to find another place to live for the time being.

"I didn't know what to think. I was still kind of in shock. But once everybody was OK I felt a lot better," says Brabham.

No one was injured at the time of the fire and no one was home in the unit where the flames started.

The American Red Cross helped the families with temporary living and essential needs.

A spokesman for the apartment complex told WTOC that the fire is under investigation and that it will not affect any other units. They are also bring cleaners out today to deal with the smoke and water damage.

"God forbid if that would have happened in the middle of the night while they were sleeping. No one would have gotten out and it could have been 10 times worse," Brabham said.
