Solicitor Duffie Stone refuses to allow a murder investigation to affect South Carolina's budget.
Witnesses at a fatal shooting in a St. Helena nightclub last year refused to cooperate with law enforcement officials; forcing the solicitor to subpoena the witnesses before the suspects were indicted.
This is first time any South Carolina solicitor has used this process, but it could be the last because it's so expensive.
"The investigation cost a lot of resources, not only from the financial stand point of paying court fees and deposition costs but also in the resources of having one lawyer dedicated to that investigation," said Solicitor Duffie Stone. "It was costly but it produced a great benefit."
Stone said this decision will not affect the murder investigation but he said he will not use this process again unless the funds are available.
