SCMPD to offer boating course

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Dept.'s Marine Patrol unit is offering a boating safety course on Aug. 17.

The free class will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the SCMPD training facility in the Savannah Mall, which is on the second floor next to Dillard's.

The class is required of boaters of certain ages before they can operate certain vessels. 

On July 1, 2014, a new Mandatory Education Law will require anyone born after Jan.1, 1998, who operates a powerboat in Georgia to have completed a DNR approved Boat Education Course, according to an SCMPD news release.

To register please contact the SCMPD Savannah Mall Training Center at 912.921.5450 or the SCMPD Marine Patrol at 912.353.1004. The class is limited to 25 participates.  

The next class offered will be offered Sept. 21.
