Former DFCS office director pleads guilty to racketeering

BAXLEY, GA (WTOC) -

A Baxley woman who ran Division of Family and Children Services offices in Telfair and Wheeler counties pleaded guilty last week to racketeering charges.

Valaree Dubberly, a former director of the Division of Family and Children Services offices, opened business credit card accounts at WalMart in the DFCS name and use the cards to make thousands of dollars worth of personal purchases, according to the Georgia Attorney General's Office. 

She also bought several WalMart gift cards and and used the Telfair and Wheeler credit cards to "reload" these cards with funds, according to the attorney general's office. 

The thefts total $10,959.50 of state money, which ran from January 2005 to October 2007. 

Dubberly was the director of the Telfair County DFCS office from October 1990 to May 2008. She was the director of the Wheeler County DFCS office from June 2007 until May 2008. She was fired from both jobs in May 2008. 

She was sentenced to five years probation, 250 hours of community service, and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine and restitution in the amount of $1,838. The rest of the money was recovered from the defendant prior to the plea, according to a news release.
