SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Teachers, faculty and staff reported to work for their first day on Monday at the new Tybee Island Maritime Academy.
The K-4 charter school will feature a maritime-based curriculum, which includes project learning and plenty of field trips to the beach and ports.
Technology will also play a huge role in the classroom, as each child will have their own laptop.
Faculty members told WTOC they are thrilled to offer a unique educational experience to the Coastal Empire.
"We are starting a brand-new family, a brand-new school - everybody's eyes are on us, and it's just very exciting," said kindergarten teacher Fannie Sexton.
"The people here are excited. The people who are coming are excited, the class sizes, the fresh approach to education," Principal Pat Rossiter said.
The school still has space for more students. To find out how to register, call 912.786.5776.
