Traffic heavy on Hwy 119 for first day of school

EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Drivers in Effingham County may have hit traffic delays on the first day of school Monday after Georgia Dept. of Transportation crews shut down one lane of GA Highway 119.

Traffic was heavy most of the day, especially during rush hour. DOT crews began repaving the road Monday afternoon; shutting down one lane of traffic while they repair the road on the same day school started for Effingham County Middle and High School.

Buses were escorted by Georgia State Patrol.  All other drivers leaving school were strongly encouraged to turn right and go toward Springfield on GA Highway 119 to prevent congestion.

Effingham County Sherriff's Office has also been monitoring the road throughout the day. They said Monday's closure combined with the first day of school went as smooth as possible. They only had to ticket a few drivers. But the only major issue for everyone was the extra time of having to wait in traffic.

"I had to one elementary school and that took 20 minutes and then I had to come here and that was 30 minutes; altogether it took about an hour," said Effingham Middle School parent Tiffany Nunnally.

There is word yet on when exactly they will reopen the road, but officials said the paving will at least take the next couple of days, so drivers should plan ahead.
