Residents question impact of National Night Out

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Communities nationwide have celebrated fighting crime for 30 years with National Night Out.

Several communities across Chatham County held their own gatherings Tuesday night, with McGruff the Crime Dog, Savannah-Chatham Metro Police, Chatham County Sheriff's Office, and Savannah Fire and EMS visiting each event.

Some were put together within the last week. Others, like the event at Pine Gardens in Savannah, have been planned for months.

Organizer Daisy Harrison has lived in the neighborhood for more than 50 years, where she says crime has grown into a daily concern.

"It is a very big issue, and most of it is drugs. We've had a lot of shootings and we don't know where they are coming from. But do you think it still help to have these events? Some people question that. I'm not sure, I'm really not." said Harrison.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police say National Night Out still helps as neighbors get familiar with police and each other, while also learning who belongs in their neighborhood and who does not.
