BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

A Beaufort police officer is recovering in the hospital after being hit and injured by a car Friday night.

1st Sgt. Christopher Cushman was outside of his cruiser clearing a separate multi-vehicle wreck when the accident happened.

Sgt. Bob Beres of the South Carolina Highway Patrol says Jamel Brown was traveling north on US 21/Boundary St. in a Ford Mustang around 9 p.m when he hit Cushman.

Cushman was transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital where he is now recovering.

"Although he is very alert and in good spirits, the next few days will be critical to the speed of his recovery. Because of his rib fractures, breathing takes all of his energy and he is very easily worn out." said Cushman's wife.

South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate.
