Truck bed lifts, slams into overpass along I-95 SB

All lanes of I-95 South around mile marker 97 are back open after a dump truck bed came unlatched and slammed into an overpass bridge overnight in Savannah.

It happened shortly before 3 a.m. Wednesday. Pooler police say a GDOT truck was traveling in the right-hand lane of I-95 South when the bed of the dump truck unlatched and lifted while it was going under the Quacco Road overpass. The truck hit the overpass bridge at mile marker #97. The collision ripped off the dump truck top and sent the rest of truck crashing into the woods along I-95 South.

The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries to his arm, chest and abdomen. He was released early this afternoon and officials say he is doing well.

GSP arrived at the scene around 5 a.m. to take over the investigation.

Police had 2 lanes blocked on the stretch of I-95 southbound where the crash occurred, which is about 2-miles from I-16 at mile marker 97. All lanes were reopened to traffic around 6 a.m. Officials just ask that motorists continue to drive slow in the area as the cause of the crash is investigated.

The Quacco Rd. bridge was closed briefly but is also back open. GDOT has confirmed that there was minor damage done to the bridge. However, it is safe to travel and is open to traffic. The bridge inspection team will be out to make repairs as soon as possible.
