RINCON, GA (WTOC) -

Effingham County sheriff's deputies have arrested a Rincon man who's accused of brutally beating his girlfriend's 2-year-old girl.

Deputies were responding to a child abuse report Tuesday night when they arrived at a home on Holly Lane and found toddler girl suffering from several injuries to her head, face and other parts of her body.

Robert Edwards, 24, was arrested on several charges including aggravated assault, first- and second-degree cruelty to children, battery, obstruction and even terroristic threats after threatening to go to the responding deputies' homes to kill them.

This is not Edwards first run-in with the law. He has been arrested before for several different crimes including drugs, domestic violence, obstruction of a law enforcement officer and cruelty to children, according to the Effingham County Sheriff's Office.

WTOC spoke with officials about the condition of the toddler.

"It's disturbing that someone would do this to a 2-year-old innocent child. She's got injuries to both of her eyes, injuries to her face where she was beaten. She's got injuries throughout her body but fortunately they are not life-threatening right now, but they are also injuries that are definitely a cause for concern," said David Ehsanipoor, spokesman for the ECSO.

The child was taken to taken to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah for treatment. The child's mother is there with her.

Edwards is in the Effingham County Jail and will make his first court appearance Wednesday.

ECSO continues to investigate and said additional arrests may be forthcoming. The Dept. of Family and Children Services is also involved in the case.
