A man accused of beating a toddler in Effingham County will face a judge on Thursday.

Robert Edwards is in the county jail awaiting a bond hearing. In the meantime, Effingham County investigators are questioning people in connection with the case.

Edwards was arrested in connection with beating his girlfriend's 2-year-old girl while the mother was at work.

Investigators say Edwards has been arrested on child cruelty charges before. He also faces a charge of making terroristic threats. They said he threatened an officer. Edwards has also been arrested over the years for drug possession, drunken driving and disorderly conduct in Chatham County.

Investigators detailed the extent of the toddler's injuries.

"There definitely several marks on this child," said David Ehsanipoor, public information officer at the Effingham County Sheriff's Office. "The child had gooseeggs on both sides of her head. She had slap marks in her face. She had other marks on her neck, back, her arms on the back of her head. This is obviously something that had been that was not just one strike. This child was unfortunately just beaten."

Effingham County investigators are now trying to determine if this toddler suffered abuse like this in the past. There's a possibility some of her bruises may be old.

"He should do serious jail time," said neighbor Christe Mock.

Neighbors and Effingham County authorities are disgusted about the incident and injuries the child suffered.

"We are going to look at these injuries and have some experts look at these injuries to find out how old some of these injuries are to see if this has been ongoing or this is just a one time event from yesterday," Ehsanipoor said.

Edwards was arrested Tuesday night at the Holly Lane. Deputies responded to a child abuse report.

"Obviously, he doesn't need to be around children at all. Mom was at work around the time of last night's beating, but we want to clarify we are going to look into it and find out if there was marks on this child that were on there for a while, and if we find out anyone withheld information or if anyone else beat this child or anyone else had knowledge of this child being beaten and not contacted us - they will be prosecuted as well," Ehsanipoor said.

The toddler is in the care of her grandparents. She was released from the hospital early Wednesday morning and is expected to be OK.

The Georgia Dept. of Family and Children Services is involved in this case. Deputies said it may be a few days before their investigation is complete.
