The City of Savannah and the Community Housing Services Agency have been working to revitalize the city and reduce crime.

"It's the last phase of the old Strathmore coming down, so it's a great feeling," said CHSA Director Darrel Daise.

Nearly 150 buildings total are being torn down to make way for new ones. The end result will be one of the largest affordable housing communities in Savannah. City officials hope it will revitalize the city and reduce crime.

"Everybody has loved it," said Daise.

Residents are already living in housing that is complete.

"The opportunity the city of Savannah is giving to the people is amazing and without their help I  would never been able to purchase a house," said resident Bonnie Kelly.

Some have experienced the transformation from the beginning, moving from the old housing to the new.

"We got new appliances and everything and I don't like being in a scum they call it," said resident Barbara Flowers.

The demolition will be complete in about two weeks, but officials said it will be almost another three years for all of the building to be complete.
