Crews rescue 2 trapped after crash on I-16

Posted: Updated:

Rescue crews were at the scene of a bad wreck overnight that had two people trapped inside the vehicle.

The single vehicle wreck was spotted around 2:45 a.m. Friday on Interstate16 eastbound at mile marker 151 in Bloomingdale by a trucker that was passing by. The truck driver reported seeing the car off the road into the trees.

Officials say a single car veered off the road and went flying into the trees and marsh, becoming half submerged in water. Two women were transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Fire and rescue crews had to use the Jaws of Life to cut the 2 victims from the wreckage. Police say they do believe one of the victims may be fatal, but that has yet to be confirmed.

"We had two women in the car that have been removed from the car. It does look like we're going to have a fatality. The victims were transported to Memorial," said Julian Miller, Savannah-Chatham Metro.

Investigators with Savannah-Chatham Metro's Major Accident Invesigations Team are now trying to determine exactly what happened. They have moved off of I-16 onto an access road to continue their investigation. All lanes on I-16 East are open. However, officers and investigators will remain at the scene for time and are asking that motorists continue to slow down and use caution in the area.

We will continue to check the status of the victims. Check and WTOC on Facebook and Twitter for updates.
