Flash flooding affecting neighborhoods all over Savannah

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Thunderstorms and rain around the Savannah area Friday added up to flash flooding in a lot of places around the Coastal Empire.

There was several inches to feet of flooding in different parts of town.

The heaviest and worst part of the rains and flash flooding happened between 6:30 and 7:30 pm causing some roads to even be shut down.

Victory Drive, the most significant road effected, and at least six other intersections were shut down for short periods of time. There were reports of flooding at almost any road in that area.

Some people were just stuck in the mud, others had to seek higher ground as flood waters reached in the area of 20 inches in some places.

Savannah wasn't the only place flooded, Tybee Island also experienced high waters as well.

Tybee Island's Daniel Torres reported flooding at the gym at Maritime Academy. Sandbags had to be brought in and the gym sustained moderate flooding. Fans were set up and volunteers used brooms to push most of the water out.

Friday marked another night where many people are waiting for the water to find a place to go, and the drying out process to begin.
