There are new developments in the fight to rid Savannah of illegal rooming houses.

On Tuesday, Ike Lewis, a man accused of owning several of these properties, was sentenced to 17 months in jail. He was also ordered to pay $73,000 in fines.

"We see this as a huge victory as far as creating safer places for our citizens to live - especially the citizens that can't afford to live in some of the nicer places. Just because they are on a low income doesn't mean they should be living in squalor," said Tracy Walden of the Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Dept.

City officials say all of the rooming houses Lewis owned have been condemned - and the tenants evicted. The judge suspended half of Lewis' sentence.

He'll end up serving about eight months in prison.
