Police step up patrols after recent attacks on Jones St.

Posted: Updated:

Southern Living has described it as, "the prettiest street in Savannah," but right now, it may be one of the most dangerous.

Late Monday night, a 71-year-old woman was robbed and brutally beaten on Jones Street in downtown Savannah. Then on Tuesday night, another woman, who is in her early 20's, was robbed at gunpoint a couple of blocks away right across the street from the famous Mrs. Wilkes' dining room.

Unfortunately, these two attacks are not the only ones to take place on Jones St. recently.

Garret Huxford is over 6-feet tall, but that didn't stop a would-be robber from taking him on with a brick last month, just two weeks before his wedding.

Huxford lives above Mrs. Wilkes and says he was headed up the stairs home when two people, a male and a female, asked him for directions to downtown. He told them they already were downtown, turned around and kept walking. That is when he says the man threw a brick at the back of his head, ran up the stairs and then pulled out another brick and attacked his face. They tumbled down the stairs and into the alley with Huxford fighting for his life and the robber's female companion egging him on.

"His goal apparently was to knock me out," Huxford said. "He never asked for anything. She told him to knock me out. He said, ‘I'm trying to,' and then I yelled for help and they ran off."

Now, police are patrolling Jones Street on foot trying to curtail these crimes.

Huxford describes his attackers as a tall, slender, dark-skinned African-American couple. The woman has long hair and the man has medium-length natural hair. Huxford says they were well dressed and he just thought they were like any normal couple strolling down the street on a night out.
