If you've always wanted to drive like a race car driver, these folks can give you the chance. Sports car lovers from around the Coastal Empire came out Saturday afternoon to put the pedal to the metal at the Autocross on Hutchinson Island.
The Coastal Empire Sports Car Club of America opens up the closed course so drivers can test their skills and agility. Amateur racers say it's not only a lot of fun, it can also help you become a better driver.
"As competitors make their way through the course, each time, they learn a little bit more about how their car brakes, how it accelerates, how it stops," explained Mark Eversoll with the Coastal Empire Sports Car Club of America. "They'll make the turns sharper and in every day driving situations, this kind of training is convenient to teach them how to avoid an accident."
The SCCA holds monthly events for amateur racers. People with a safe car and a driver's license can take part.
