SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A man wanted on child molestation charges is in police custody after a four-hour manhunt.

Earlier Wednesday, three schools on Whitemarsh Island went on cautionary lockdown while police searched for 40-year-old James Dover nearby.

Dover was on Savannah-Chatham Metro's radar as early as Monday night. His latest address is on Johnny Mercer Boulevard.

On Tuesday night, there were sightings of Dover as his mugshot was publicized. Police said he molested a 13-year-old girl.

On Wednesday morning, a runner saw him down the street near The Islands YMCA. Before long, police saw him.

Dover jumped out his car and ran into the Long Point housing development. That's when the manhunt began.

K9 officers joined the search. A helicopter flew over head. Police searched cars in the condominium complex next door.

Police said Dover is considered a danger to himself and others. He told police he would not be taken alive, which caused some fears for parents.

Parents who spoke with WTOC said they felt the situation was under control.

"First and foremost, I had a lot of confidence in the schools. I love that we weren't able to go on campus and the children were safe inside the buildings so that was first and foremost; and secondly, I had a lot of faith in our police that they would apprehend the perpetrator and finalize getting him out of the area," said Bridgette Hartfield, whose children were at one of the schools on lockdown.

The search began at 8:30 a.m. by 12:15 p.m., the mobile command moved out and an ambulance and prisoner transport moved in. Schools were taken off of lockdown. By 12:30 p.m., police said Dover was in custody.

Capt. John Best said tips from residents lead a K9 officer to Dover, who was in a marsh behind a home, and not armed. Best said Dover was in "rough shape" and had attempted suicide the night before through carbon monoxide poisoning.

Additional charges against him are still pending.
