athletes help teach literacy at East Broad Street Elementary School.
The school kicked off their "Read with the SSU Tigers" program Wednesday with a pep rally.
As part of the program, student athletes from Savannah State University will visit
the elementary school twice a week to work with students on reading.
Each month the students with the highest amount of reading participation will be rewarded with free tickets to an SSU football or basketball game.
Kimberly Chappell-Stevens, principal of East Broad Street Elementary School, said that the Savannah State University athletes will focus on helping the students with their reading, but also read stories with them and emphasize the importance of reading at home with their parents.
