MIDWAY, GA (WTOC) -

A suspect is in custody after a high-speed chase on Thursday afternoon.

Liberty County Sheriff Steve Sikes said the chase happened 20 minutes ago. He said it started in McIntosh County at Darien Mall Outlet Center and involved a potential shoplifting suspect and a rental car.

A chase ensued from the mall. Sikes said the driver got on I-95 northbound, then he got off at exit 76 onto Ga. Hwy 84 heading toward Hinesville in Midway.

From there, the suspect took a right onto Hwy 17 when a responding officer used a PIT maneuver to stop the car. The officer cited the suspect for traveling at a high rate of speed and potentially endangering children getting off a school bus.

There were three men and woman who are all in their 20s in the car at the time. They're charged in McIntosh County with theft and in Liberty County they're charged with fleeing.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating.
