Eighth-grader testifies in murder of baby

COBB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

The now 15-year-old eighth-grader Dominique Lang, who claimed to be with De'Marquise Elkins, the teen suspected of gunning down a Brunswick baby, testified on Thursday, often arguing with Elkins' defense attorneys.

Elkins, who was 17 years old at the time that 13-month-old Antonio Santiago was shot in the head and killed in his stroller in March, also appeared in video showing Glynn County police questioning him near where Santiago was killed.

Prosecutors asked Lang what Elkins did before the shooting.

"He asked me did I ever rob somebody before," Lang said.

Lang testified that Elkins later approached Sherry West, Antonio's mother, and demanded her purse several times at gunpoint, even hitting her in the face with the gun. Lang said West refused to give Elkins her purse.

"He threatened the baby," Lang said. "He was like, ‘five, four, three.' Then she stopped him."

Lang claimed that he did not see Antonio get shot. A medical examiner testified earlier this week that Antonio was shot at close range, right between his eyes.

Lang faces three felony charges himself and could serve life in prison. When asked by defense attorneys if he had gotten a plea deal from the state to persuade him to testify against Elkins, Lang said he had not.

The trial was moved from Glynn County to Cobb County because of the amount of media attention it has received. Jurors will continue hearing testimony on Friday at 8:45 a.m.
