Humane Society, Animal Control team up for adoption day event

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Humane Society for Greater Savannah and Savannah Chatham Animal Control held their second joint adoption day event on Saturday.

All animals adopted were spayed/neutered, up-to-date on vaccines and micro-chipped.

All of the adoptions support the Humane Society in the 2013 ASPCA Challenge as they strive to adopt 787 pets by Aug. 31. Adoptions from both the Humane Society and Animal Control count towards the total.

Recruits from Class 269 with the Savannah Public Safety Training center also held a "Cadets For Critters" at Animal Control to collect monitory donations or food and essentials. They also sold hot dogs for $1 each to help out the cause.

"Turnout's been pretty good as you can see right here. We already have plenty of donations from the community and from folks over there at the training center." said Travis Koston, Class 269.

In the contest, the Humane Society for Greater Savannah is competing for $25,000, but they need the public's help.

"Actually we are third in the voting, which means we may actually win the $25,000. But, we do need to reach our goals of 787 adoptions by next Saturday to actually be eligible for that money." said Guinn Friedman, Director of Operations, Humane Society of Greater Savannah.

After today's joint adoption event, they have 159 adoptions left to reach their goal.
