SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

New University of Georgia President Jere Morehead was in Savannah on Monday.

Morehead, who took the reins from Michael Adams on July 1 told the Rotary Club of Savannah that student achievement will be the centerpiece of his administration.

"When you come to ask for something from the university you need to show me one of two things: how is it going to improve the academic reputation of the University of Georgia or how is it going to better educate the students of the University of Georgia and if it's not going to do one of those things then my question back to you is  why are we doing it?" Morehead said.

Morehead's off to a good start in reaching his academic goals –  the 5,150 freshman of the University of Georgia have an average GPA of 3.86 and an SAT score of 1280 - the highest in the university's history.
