Beaufort's Bay Street paving schedule may be shorter

BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

There's good news for Beaufort businesses. It may not take a full week to pave Bay Street.

The plan is to shut down one section of Bay Street from Carteret Street down to Charles Street using two shifts for an entire 24 hours.

The other section, going from North Street to Newscastle Street will take roughly two days to finish.

Paving on Bay Street is scheduled to last no more than three to four days.

Local business owners, who were upset that the project was originally scheduled right before Labor Day, are excited it will not interfere too much with their hours of operation.

"I'm ecstatic. I'm so happy that they heard everybody and listened to them and made changes. Now it's after Labor Day and they're even talking about doing it in a shorter span of time which is fantastic, if they can get in and do the streets through the week and then be out before our week kicks off, that's even better," said Darlene Kelly, owner of Simply Southern.

Beaufort city leaders are scheduled to meet with local contractors and DOT representatives Wednesday morning to finalize their plans.

The Beaufort paving project is scheduled to start on Sept. 3.
