DeRenne from Montgomery to Abercorn reopens

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Savannah-Chatham Metro Police said has cleared a scene after responding to a suspicious object at DeRenne Avenue and Bull Street.

Police said someone called to report that a rice cooker was at that location. An officer checked the object and saw what appeared to be a chemical coming out of the cooker.

They shut down the area. Businesses nearby were evacuated. A hazmat crew and the bomb squad were called in. They checked the crock pot and have since removed the object.

SCMPD Lt. Keith Edwards said, "Ten years ago, we probably wouldn't be doing this at all."

"I just hope this block isn't blown off of Savannah, Georgia," said Shaiteria Jones who works nearby.

"It's just some nasty food that tied up a lot of resources when someone easily could've placed that in the trash can," said Lt. Keith Edwards.

DeRenne Avenue and Montgomery Street and Abercorn Street have since reopened and traffic is moving again.
