Sandhill Road house fire called suspicious

The Effingham County Sheriff's Office says a man hospitalized is a person of interest in connection with an overnight house fire.

It happened shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday at a home in the 1600 block of Sandhill Road off of U.S. 80. near the Ogeechee River.

The back of the home suffered significant damage and the roof was destroyed.

"The home was vacant at the time but it appears to be arson," said David Ehsanipoor, spokesman with the Effingham County Sheriff's Office. "One person drove to another location in Chatham County and requested EMS for smoke inhalation. The unidentified man is a person of interest and has been taken to an area hospital."

The fire remains under investigation by the Effingham County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division.
