A 19-year-old was gunned down in broad daylight in an apartment complex parking lot. It happened just off Abercorn on the Southside at Edgewater Trace apartments last evening. Right around 5:30pm, at least one man walked up to 19-year-old Matthew Johnson in the parking lot and shot him at least once, killing him on the spot.
The killer shot Johnson at point blank range in front of Building Four at Edgewater Trace. Because of the time of day and the location, just off Abercorn Street, a lot of people saw everything as it happened.
"There were a number of people," said Savannah-Chatham police spokesman Sgt. Mike Wilson. "This was rush hour traffic and we feel relatively positive about the leads we've developed so far."
Witnesses told police the shooter ran off through the apartment complex on foot, and Johnson tried to do the same.
"The victim ran a short distance from where the shooting occurred and collapsed in the parking lot," said Wilson. "Investigators began canvassing this area at the time. A lot of the dwellers of the complex have been very cooperative."
Johnson's body is being taken to the GBI crime lab for an autopsy.
While investigators are confident they've got some good leads, they're still asking for help from the public. If you have any information on this shooting, please call CrimeStoppers at 234-2020.
