A Ridgeland man is dead after an early-morning shooting. It happened at a home off of Captain Bill Road near Interstate 95 northbound.

Jasper County Sheriff's Office said that at about 12:30 a.m. they were called to a shooting at home on Captain Bill Road. When they arrived, 36-year-old Jermaine Austin was found dead from a gunshot wound.

Austin's family told WTOC they were grilling outside when someone drove by and started shooting.

"All I heard was gunshots. I heard my mama and cousins screaming my brother's name and then I went under the tree and all I saw way the blood leaking out of my brother's head," said the victim's sister Angelica Austin. "My brother, he was more than just a big brother to me. He was like a second father. He was always there when I needed something. When my dad died, he stepped up and took care of me. He gave when I needed and he was always there for me," Angelica Austin said.

The sheriff's office has not confirmed whether this is a drive-by shooting.

"He was a quiet young man; never picked at nobody; never said a harsh word to nobody," said Betty Austin, the victim's mother.

Austin's sister said this type of violence needs to stop.

"There's too many unsolved murders going on. [It] looks like every month somebody is getting killed. There's just too much going on. Ridgeland is not that big for all of this to be going on," said Angelica Austin.

The sheriff's office said they are also investigating a shooting from Thursday night in the same neighborhood. No one was injured in that one. There is no word yet if the two shootings are related.

The sheriff's office has called on the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to assist in this investigation.
