SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Georgia State Patrol was involved in a high-speed chase with a car that ended up crashing into a tree at Augusta Avenue and Lily Street.

The suspects inside the car ran off toward East Lathrop and Bay streets, according to the GSP.

It all started after a trooper tried to pull over the car on I-16 westbound side. The trooper got out and the driver took off.

Trooper Josh Riddle said that what they found inside may give some clues as to why they fled.

"There was a very strong odor of marijuana. There were two green substance looked like marijuana and a white powdery substance. [It] looked like cocaine ... that's all we found right now," he said.

It's not yet known if this crash is related to a crash that occurred between Richter and Falkner streets.
