Beaufort sees tourism boost over holiday weekend

BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

AAA projects this Labor Day holiday to be the highest travel day for Americans since the 2008 recession.

Despite rising gas prices, more than 34 million people will travel more than 50 miles during the three-day weekend, which is up 4.2 percent from last year.

That means more tourism for popular destinations such as Beaufort. The Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce reports many hotels are fully booked or near capacity.

"It's busy. Traditionally Labor Day is the last day before the kids go to school. It's always a lot of people traveling and we had a lot of walk-ins so it was busy," said Jiten Desai, manager of the Country Inn & Suites.

Many hotels say guests checked out of their rooms Monday to head home.
