SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford, of South Carolina, stopped by WTOC studios on Tuesday.

Vice President Joe Biden will be visiting ports in Savannah and Charleston ahead of the completion of the Panama Canal expansion.

Sanford said it is a very important indicator that he would choose to make stops here in the Southeast.

"At the end of the day, you can literally begin to count on both hands the number of ports around the country that are going to be able to handle post Panamatic depth ships. You look at the volume and how it is going to change once the canal is widened. I think there are incredible implications in the Southeast - based on what happens in Savannah - what happens in Charleston," Sanford said.

Biden is scheduled to be in Savannah on Sept. 16.
