Measles found at two Massachusetts hospitals

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has confirmed two cases of measles, which were diagnosed in August at Mass General Hospital in Boston and Metrowest Hospital in Framingham.

The DPH says measles is very contagious and people who are not immune may be at risk for developing measles, or may now be developing symptoms of the disease.

Anyone showing symptoms of measles and visited the hospitals on any of the dates listed below is advised to contact their health care provider.

  • MGH, Boston Medical Walk-in Clinic – 8/17, 8/19
  • MGH, Boston Emergency Dept. 8/20
  • MGH, Boston Inpatient 8/20, 8/21, 8/22, 8/23
  • Metrowest Hospital, Framingham Emergency Department 8/23, 8/24
  • Metrowest Hospital, Framingham Inpatient 8/23, 8/24

According to the DPH, early symptoms of measles occur 10 days to two weeks after exposure, and may resemble a cold, but a rash occurs on the skin 2-4 days after the initial symptoms develop.

People who have had measles in the past or who have been vaccinated are considered immune.
