Gas odor spreads from Savannah to Springfield

GARDEN CITY, GA (WTOC) -

The source strong smell of gas that spread from Savannah's west side to Springfield has been located. 

A chemical used to give natural gas its odor was emanating from a tanker truck at the R.P. McNamera truck yard off U.S. 80, according to Savannah Fire. Natural gas is odorless without the added chemical. 

Fair Street was closed from West Bay to Division Street. Four people from separate locations in Garden City were treated by EMTs. Two were taken to an area hospital.

The Family Dollar store at Ga. Hwy 21 and Minus Avenue was evacuated.

The Chatham Emergency Management Agency released this alert: 

There is a HEAVY smell of natural gas covering western Savannah and Eastern Garden City. Multiple Fire Departments and Police Departments are investigating. Hazmat is involved also.  CEMA is sending a duty officer and calling Red Cross in case an evacuation is required.
