Single car wreck, truck on fire cause major traffic woes

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

An accident caused the traffic lights on Abercorn and Apache to go out Saturday afternoon, and less than an hour later, a truck caught on fire in the same area.

According to Savannah Fire, a car was traveling northbound on Abercorn towards Apache Avenue around 4 pm Saturday. The driver lost control of the car, jumped the curb and hit a pole, splitting it in half and knocking out power.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police shutdown the northbound lanes of Abercorn from Apache to Science Drive for several hours due to dangling power lines in the street.

The driver was taken to the hospital with what appeared to be minor injuries.

While crews were working that scene a truck caught fire on Middleground Road. The driver made it out without injuries.

Officials say northbound traffic on Abercorn between Science Drive and Apache will continue to be blocked off as crews replace wiring until around midnight.
