Schools Across Minnesota Celebrate Local, Healthy Eating
ST. CLOUD, Minn., Sept. 10, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Backpacks, school buses and smiles on eager student faces ... all signs that school is underway again in Minnesota. An important part of making sure students are ready to learn includes nutritious breakfasts, lunches and snacks provided by school nutrition programs across the state.
September is Farm to School Month in Minnesota. Farm to School is a nationwide collaborative effort to connect school districts with local farmers for the purpose of serving healthy school meals while utilizing local fresh foods. Farm to School aims to meet the diverse needs of school nutrition programs in an efficient manner, to support regional and local farmers and thereby strengthen local food systems and to provide support for health and nutrition education.
By improving the offerings of fresh fruits and vegetables, Farm to School programs help make the healthy choice the easy choice for students. Kids eat more fresh local foods and learn about where their food comes from, all while supporting local farmers. By connecting farms and schools, children, schools and farmers all benefit.
"Schools participating in Farm to School Month will be serving many local favorites including a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables and other minimally processed foods in school meals," shared Sharon Maus, executive director of the Minnesota School Nutrition Association. "In addition, many educational activities like visiting local farms and gardening will be happening in September and throughout the school year to help our kids embrace eating healthy foods grown close to home."
