No foul play suspected after man's body found near dumpster

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A body was discovered at Northstar recycling in Springfield Tuesday morning when workers were unloading a shipment of recyclable cardboard onto a conveyer belt.

The victim has been identified as 55-year-old Jose Gonzalez of Springfield. After a day long investigation it was determined that the recycling truck picked up Gonzalez's body from a dumpster located behind the bus terminal at 1776 Main St. Video surveillance showed Gonzalez drinking alcohol near the dumpster around 4:30 a.m. and then crawling inside the cardboard receptacle.

There is no evidence of foul play and the crime is being treated as an unattended death.

"We don't see any marks or bullets or stab wounds," said Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney.

Delaney said police had to go through piles of evidence to determine where the body had come from as the truck had made stops this morning in Springfield, West Springfield, Agawam and Chicopee.

An autopsy will be performed to determine if Gonzalez was dead before the truck picked him up.
