BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) - The texting while driving ban passed unanimously at the Beaufort County council meeting, with the exemption for first responders.
Monday night was the third and final reading as well as public hearing on the matter, and no one spoke out against it.
The new law takes effect now, and the Sheriff's Office hopes to get the word out first to the public.
Violators will pay $100 for the first offense, $200 for the second offense and $300 for the third offense and subsequent offenses.
The county joins the city of Beaufort and Hilton Head with a texting ordinance now.
Only Bluffton and Port Royal do not have one in place.
