Pleas reached in Bulloch court clerk case

Posted: Updated:

Three current and former deputy court clerks entered plea agreements in theft and violation of oath charges.

Leatha DeLoach, Marion Williams and Amanda Smith each pleaded guilty to felony theft by conversion charges. Each was sentenced to 10 years probation and ordered to pay $6,000 apiece in restitution. That probation could be lifted if a defendant completes four years without any criminal violations. Prosecutors dropped charges of violation of oath of office and records tampering for each woman.

Prosecutors quashed, or dismissed, similar charges against former Clerk of Court Sherri Akins. Defense attorneys argued current clerk Teresa Tucker and her attorney were present during grand jury presentments and were allowed to present evidence, which they agrued "tainted" Akins' case.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the case against Tucker continues. An interim clerk, retired GBI agent Charles Sikes, was appointed by Gov. Nathan Deal to oversee the office in Tucker's absence.
